Question #2

What “abominable advantage” does God have over Satan? Letter 1 and 4? Matthew 1:18-25; John 1:1-18, Colossians 1:15-20, and Hebrews 1:1-4, 2:10-18. To what is Screwtape referring to? In what way is this advantage also an advantage to Christians?

To help you all with this, I want to offer up Leviticus 26:12 "And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you shall be my people". For the New Testement, please look to the whole idea of incarnational God. or to come in the flesh, or in Greek "sarks", this is at the heart of this question I think.

The 'abominable advantage' that God has over satan is that God has come in human form, where satan has only been a spiritual being. This is an advantage to Christians I think for many reasons, some of which are it gave us a window to God. Through Jesus we get to know God and His ways through example, an example that shows us how we should live out our lives. Another advantage is Jesus experienced what we experience as human beings, as it says in Hebrews He "shared our humanity" and understands us, and "Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted." Whereas satan can jab and tempt us, through Jesus we have the power over satan to resist tempatation, to ask for help through the power of prayer, and to defeat satan and his demons in both life and death.

God's "abominable advantage" is His ability to give spirit the gift human form.
